Installing mSATA SSD in HP EliteDesk 800

HP has good pricing on lower end EliteDesk 800 systems (E3T82UT with an i3-4130, 4GB RAM) with 500GB 2.5” spinners inside. I popped in a Crucial M500 240GB mSATA (CT240M500SSD3) for a media center, but found that no mSATA screws were included with the chassis. The standard mSATA screws (M2x2mm I think) that came with the Crucial did not fit the chassis/board.

Solution

I found that M1.6x3mm screws fit nicely. I ordered qty 15 (smallest number, sigh) from Laptop Screws. Note: You probably can find better options with better heads, but I ended up shotgunning and buying a bunch of sizes, hoping one would fit. These cheesehead screws fit fine, and were flat to ensure they didn’t interfere with the 2.5” drive chassis that sits right above it.

I wasn’t able to find documentation from HP about what screws would be required, and reading around, some people seemed to say that they needed to purchase the disks from HP directly to get the right screws (!!).
